Exercises after the operation | Carpal tunnel syndrome – exercises that help

Exercises after the operation

Although the hand must be immobilized for 3 weeks after the operation for carpal tunnel syndrome, it is important to start with light exercises the day after the operation. This not only prevents unnecessary stiffening of the structures of the forearm, but also has a positive effect on the healing process. It is important that the performed exercises do not cause pain and swelling and should be demonstrated in advance by the doctor or physiotherapist.

Special finger exercises and exercises for the gentle mobilization of the wrist have proven to be particularly effective. Two examples are described in more detail below: 1) Mobilising the wrist For this exercise, stretch your arms straight forward so that the palms of your hands are facing each other. Now fold the wrist of the operated hand 90° to the middle so that the palm of the hand is now facing the upper body.

Hold this position for 5-10 seconds and then return to the starting position. 5 repetitions several times a day. 2) Mobilization of the fingers For this exercise, first stretch the fingers straight.

Afterwards, slowly spread your fingers apart as much as possible and then approach them again. Then slowly roll your fingers towards the ball of your hand and slowly stretch them out again. 5 repetitions several times a day.

Summary

Carpathian tunnel syndrome is a common overuse or injury-induced phenomenon on the flexor side of the wrist. Motor and sensitive failure symptoms are the result of compression of the median nerve running in the canal. In physiotherapy, various exercises are used to mobilize, relieve and strengthen affected structures and to practice coordination in order to restore full functionality in the hand and fingers. If there is no long-term success, there is the possibility of a small operation in which the limiting ligament of the carpal tunnel is split to give the structures space to function properly again.
