Exercises to follow in case of shoulder arthrosis (omarthrosis)

The exercises for shoulder arthrosis are an essential part of conservative therapy as well as post-operative treatment. The exercises serve to relieve the patient’s pain, improve joint mobility, slow down the progressive arthrosis process and increase the strength and stability of the shoulder. Therapy for shoulder joint arthrosis is initially possible with conservative medication and physiotherapy. Depending on the progress of the disease, a variety of different exercises can be used.

Exercises to imitate

A joint with its structures is nourished and kept mobile by its movement. If the movement is restricted due to pain, the result is increasing immobility (vicious circle). The remaining cartilage is less well nourished by the lack of movement and its quality continues to decline.

The surrounding musculature is not sufficiently supported and loses strength, tendons lose elasticity and the capsule loses mobility. In order to counteract this, the joint should be gently mobilized to supply the joint surfaces even in the case of arthrosis. There are various exercises for this mobilization.

  • Arm pendulums to the front and back, as well as from a bent position (so that the arm hangs loosely in front of the body) to the right and left ensure a relaxed, less strained movement in the shoulder joint.
  • Run up a wall with your arms.

However, all exercises should be done urgently without any evasion mechanism. Exercises of abutment mobilization are excellent and can also be used to mobilize the shoulder.

  • Wipe over a table with a cloth
  • Here the arm is spread to the side while the shoulder deliberately keeps the wide distance to the equilateral ear.

The torso tilts to the same side and thus prevents the evasion mechanism from working. The movement of the joint partners humeral head and shoulder blade is now maximum. When the arm is retracted, the patient straightens up again and can easily pull the shoulder up.

Then a new cycle begins. The exercise should fall easily and have a relieving effect. It can be performed up to 20 times in a row.
