Eye throbbing – What are the causes?

A throbbing eye can be very unpleasant. Often the throbbing comes from noticing your own pulse. This can be the case with high blood pressure, for example.

Throbbing can also be caused by muscle twitches, e.g. by the muscles on the eyelid. They usually pass quickly and also occur in healthy people, especially under stress. A doctor should be consulted if there is inflammation in the area around the eyes; it is usually treated with antibiotic ointments or drops.

Throbbing in the eye can also be caused by radiating pain, for example headaches or earaches. If these last longer, a doctor should also be consulted to clarify the cause.
