Fatigue fracture at the knee

Since the knee itself is a joint, a fatigue fracture may not occur directly in the knee, but either at the kneecap or the upper tibial plateau. Here too, the cause of the fatigue fracture is a long-lasting overloading of the bone. Sportsmen and women are particularly at risk, especially contact sports such as basketball or soccer, but also sports that require many rotational movements of the knee, e.g. dancing or figure skating.

In contrast to a fracture caused by an accident, the symptoms of a fatigue fracture in the knee tend to manifest themselves more insidiously, for example by restricted movement or pain under stress. When treating a fatigue fracture, the trigger for the injury should always be taken into consideration to prevent a recurrence of the fracture. If the physician determines a fatigue fracture of the knee, immobilization is the first and foremost consideration.

Pain-inhibiting medication and lymphatic drainage to remove excess fluid in the knee are good ways to promote knee healing. As a rule, a fatigue fracture in the knee heals on its own without any problems, as long as the person concerned keeps to the prescribed immobilization. This is particularly important for the knee, as movement can be severely restricted by possible consequential damage.

2. stability Stand on the damaged leg. Make sure that hip, knee and foot form a straight line. Close your eyes and keep your balance as long as possible.

3. strengthen the muscles Lie backwards in front of a wall and bend your knees 90° in the air. The soles of your feet touch the wall. Now press against the wall for 20 seconds and hold the tension, then pause for 30 seconds and repeat a total of 3 times.
