Features

The forearm consists of two bones: ulna and radius. In Monteggia fracture, unlike Galeazzi fracture (where the radius breaks), the ulna is broken. The bone breaks near the elbow joint. The bone that complements the forearm, the radius, is dislocated near the elbow joint. For this reason, Monteggia fracture therapy is particularly important

Origin of the Monteggia injury

A Monteggia fracture of the ulna is usually caused by a fall on the slightly bent arm. Probably the forearm is twisted inwards. First, the fragments of the bone must be returned to their original position.

Doctors refer to this as reduction. A fracture of the ulna near the elbow joint is treated with a so-called plate osteosynthesis. By osteosynthesis the physician understands a (re)production of the bone structure.

Here, the bone fragments are rejoined with the help of a plate that is screwed onto the bone. The spoke returns spontaneously to its original position without therapy.
