Felbinac

Products

In many countries, finished medicinal products containing the active ingredient Felbinac are currently no longer on the market (previously, for example, Dolo Target). In Germany, the cooling ThermaCare pain gel is available (UK: Traxam).

Structure and properties

Felbinac (C14H12O2, Mr = 212.2 g/mol) is an acetic acid derivative of biphenyl. It is present in the drug as a diisopropanolamine salt (felbinac-1,1′-iminobis(2-propanol)).

Effects

Felbinac (ATC M02AA08) has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of the enzyme cyclooxygenase, which is responsible for the formation of prostaglandins.

Indications

For external treatment of sports and accidental injuries and inflammatory soft tissue rheumatic diseases.

Dosage

According to the package leaflet. The gel is applied two to four times a day and gently massaged in.

Contraindications

Its use is contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity to the active substance, excipients or other NSAIDs. It should not be used during pregnancy and lactation. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Interactions

No drug-drug interactions are known to date.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include local skin redness, skin inflammation, and itching. Felbinac may make the skin more sensitive to sunlight.
