Femoral Neck Fracture: Classification

According to the ICD-10, the following forms can be distinguished:

  • Intracapsular fracture (S72.01) – fracture line located in the capsule.
  • Fracture in the region of the epiphysis (S72.02) – fracture line located in the joint end with bone core
  • Subcapital fracture (S72.03) – fracture line located below the articular head.
  • Mediocervical fracture (S72.04) – fracture line passing through the neck of the femur.
  • Fracture at the base (S72.05)
  • Fracture at other site (S72.08)

31-B1 Fracture subcapital, poorly dislocated, may be impacted
31-B2 Fracture transcervical
31-B3 Fracture subcapital, dislocated, not impacted

Pauwels I to the horizontal < 30°
Pauwels II to the horizontal 30-50°
Pauwels III to the horizontal > 50°
