Products

Medicinal products containing fig extract are commercially available in many countries as syrup (fig syrup) and in tablet form (e.g., Zeller fig syrup, tablets), among others. Fig preparations often also contain senna.

Medicinal drug

The fruits are used as a medicinal raw material (fig, Caricae fructus), the dried, whole fruiting stem of L. Figs are dried (Caricae fructus siccatus) and extracts and other preparations such as Composite Fig Syrup (Caricae syrupus compositus PH) are made from them.

Ingredients

Ingredients include invert sugar, pectins, and organic acids.

Effects

Figs and their preparations are thought to have laxative properties.

Indications for use

For the treatment of constipation.

Contraindications

Figs are contraindicated in case of hypersensitivity. For complete precautions, see the drug label.

Adverse effects

Meadow grass dermatitis may occur when gardening with fig trees. Therefore, gloves should always be worn for this purpose.
