Flank pain (synonym: flank pain; ICD-10-GM R10.4: Other and unspecified abdominal pain) refers to localized pain in the area of the flank.
The most common cause of acute flank pain is ureterolithiasis (the presence of urinary stones in the ureter), with a prevalence of 3-5% in the population of industrialized countries.
Acute flank pain can be a symptom of many diseases (see under “Differential diagnoses”).
