Flatulence (Meteorism): Diagnostic Tests

Obligatory medical device diagnostics.

  • H2 breath test – to rule out lactose, fructose, or sorbitol intolerance In this test procedure, a baseline determination of exhaled hydrogen concentration is made before the examination begins; then the affected person is asked to ingest the test sugar (either a lactose, fructose or sorbitol solution) and subsequently the hydrogen concentration in the breath is measured every ten minutes for three to four hours; if the measured values deviate more than 20 ppm (parts per million) from the initial value, the finding is considered pathological.
  • Abdominal sonography (ultrasound examination of the abdominal organs) – for basic diagnostics.

Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics and mandatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • X-ray – so-called abdominal empty image to assess the intestine.
  • Computed tomography (CT; sectional imaging procedure (X-ray images from different directions with computer-based evaluation), particularly well suited for imaging the abdominal organs) – to exclude benign (benign)/malignant (malignant) diseases.
  • Gastroscopy (gastroscopy) – for suspected gastric diseases such as ulcers (ulcers) or gastric outlet stenosis (narrowing of the gastric outlet).
  • Colonoscopy (colonoscopy) – when tumors are suspected.
  • Small intestine/pancreas examination (pancreas examination) with the following examination methods:
    • Abdominal sonography
    • Capsule endoscopy – procedure to visualize the mucosa of the digestive tract (esp. the small intestine) using a swallowable camera capsule.
    • Endosonography (endoscopic ultrasound (EUS); ultrasound examination performed from the inside, i.e., the ultrasound probe is brought into direct contact with the internal surface (for example, the mucosa of the stomach/intestine) by means of an endoscope (optical instrument)). – Examination of abdominal organs with ultrasound from the stomach (examination process is similar to gastroscopy/ gastroscopy).
