Flatulence (Meteorism): Drug Therapy

Therapeutic target

Reduction of symptoms

Therapy recommendations

  • Symptomatic therapy with silicone dioxide mixtures (defoamers) and spasmolytics.
  • If necessary, also probiotic therapy (see below).
  • Attention. To treat meteorism in the long term, the underlying disease must be found.
  • See also under “Further therapy“.

Furthermore, the following substances can be used:

  • Probiotics: see below supplements
  • Silicone dioxide mixtures (so-called defoamers) prevent larger amounts of gas from accumulating in the intestine. They are usually administered in the form of chewable tablets. A well-known representative of this group is the active ingredient simeticon. These drugs are used on before examinations or operations on the gastrointestinal tract to get a better overview
  • Spasmolytics (antispasmodic drugs): they are divided into several subgroups and are used in bronchial asthma, renal and biliary colic and gastrointestinal spasms, among others. The main representatives are butylscopolamine and scopolamine.

Supplements (dietary supplements; vital substances)

Suitable dietary supplements should contain the following vital substances:

A typical representative of probiotics are lactobacilli. These are lactic acid bacteria that can break down sugar to lactic acid. They occur naturally in the human intestine. Patients suffering from irritable bowel syndrome benefit from taking lactobacilli. These and other probiotic germs displace gas-forming bacteria (e.g. dietary supplements with probiotic cultures).
