Flatulence (Meteorism): Therapy

Therapy for meteorism (flatulence) depends on the cause.

General measures

  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on existing disease.
  • Avoidance of psychosocial stress:
    • Bullying
    • Mental conflicts
    • Stress

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • A total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit daily (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grains, vegetables) – at the beginning of a high-fiber diet, there may be increased flatulence, but after two to three weeks will stop
  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
    • Avoid irregular and excessive meals
    • Hasty eating promotes flatulence
    • Avoid flatulent foods such as legumes, cabbage and wheat bran
    • Artificial sweeteners (sorbitol!) Increase flatulence.
    • Avoid carbonated drinks
    • Herbs or herbal and medicinal teas help – caraway, fennel and anise have a flatulence-relieving effect
    • Peppermint oil prevents foul-smelling intestinal gas.
    • Jerusalem artichoke, which contains inulin, can also increase gas production.

  • Selection of appropriate foods based on the nutritional analysis.
