Plantago afra, plantain
Plant description
The plant is native to the western Mediterranean area and is also cultivated there. The annual herb is up to 50 cm high and very similar to the native ribwort plantain. The stems are branched, while the leaves are arranged in opposite directions and are narrow. Inconspicuous white flowers sit in spherical ears on thin stems. The seeds are dark brown to red-black and only 2 to 3 mm long and elliptical.
Ingredients
Mucilage, fatty oil, protein and iridoids
Curative effects and application
The seed of the flea seedwort is used medicinally. It has an enormous swelling capacity, making it a good remedy for constipation. The psyllium is mainly used when a soft stool is desired, for example in the case of hemorrhoids or after surgery.
Preparation
Let 2 to 3 teaspoons of psyllium seeds swell with a little water. Take 1 teaspoon of this in the morning and 1 teaspoon in the evening with plenty of liquid.
Side effects
Under normal circumstances there are no side effects to be feared. However, if intestinal obstruction cannot be ruled out, the psyllium should not be used. Continuous use should also be avoided.
