Floxal

Introduction

Floxal is the trade name of a drug containing the active ingredient Ofloxacin. Ofloxacin belongs to the group of antibiotics, more precisely the fluoroquinolones. Floxal is intended for use on the eye and is available in the form of eye drops and eye ointment. It is used to treat various types of eye infections. The medicine is available only on prescription.

Indication

Floxal is used to treat infections of the eye caused by bacteria. Typical indications are conjunctivitis, keratitis and inflammation of the lacrimal sac (dacrocystitis) and eyelid margin (blepharitis). The relatively frequently occurring barleycorn (hordeolum) also belongs to the group of eyelid margin inflammation.

Conjunctivitis is characterized by redness in one or both eyes, often accompanied by itching and a foreign body sensation. One eye or both eyes may be affected. Corneal inflammation is also characterized by a foreign body sensation and reddening of the eyes, but is usually accompanied by severe pain, unlike conjunctivitis.

A deterioration in visual acuity and photophobia can also occur. Lacrimal sac inflammation is characterized by swelling and redness in the inner corner of the eye, which is painful under pressure, and increased secretion of tear fluid or pus. The affected eye may also be reddened.

Usually only one eye is affected by a lachrymal sac inflammation. Inflammation of the eyelid margin is accompanied by redness and swelling of the lid margin, a foreign body sensation in the eye and stuck together eyelids and eyelashes after sleeping. Eyelashes may fall out.

The barleycorn belongs to the group of eyelid margin inflammations. Conjunctivitis can have various causes. Most frequently, allergic reactions, such as hay fever, lead to such an inflammation.

Then both eyes are usually affected. More rarely, infectious pathogens such as viruses or bacteria can be the trigger. In most cases, bacteria can be treated well with the antibiotic Floxal.

However, since it is not obvious to the eye whether it is a bacterial or viral pathogen, eye drops are often prescribed even if it is not entirely clear what kind of pathogen it is. For treatment, one drop is given into the affected eye several times a day. If the pathogens are sensitive to Ofloxacin, the symptoms usually subside significantly after a few days.
