Flufenamic Acid

Products

Flufenamic acid is commercially available as cream, gel, emgel, and ointment exclusively in combination preparations for external use (e.g., Assan). It was developed in the 1960s.

Structure and properties

Flufenamic acid (C14H10F3NO2, Mr = 281.23 g/mol) belongs to the anthranilic acid derivatives and fenamates, like etofenamate and mefenamic acid.

Effects

Flufenamic acid (ATC M01AG03) has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis by inhibition of the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX). Furthermore, flufenamic acid interacts with various ion channels and is therefore used in pharmacological research.
