Fluoride tablets at 0.25 and 1.0 mg have been approved in many countries since 1950 (Zymafluor).

Structure and properties

The tablets contain sodium fluoride (NaF, Mr = 41.99 g/mol), a white powder or colorless crystals that are soluble in water.

Effects

Sodium fluoride (ATC A01AA01) protects teeth from decay. It protects tooth enamel against acids and promotes remineralization.

Indications

  • Prevention of dental caries.
  • As an alternative to fluoridated table salt or fluoridated drinking water.
  • During pregnancy and as an additional preventive measure.

Dosage

According to the professional information. The tablets are dissolved in the mouth once a day, preferably in the evening after brushing the teeth and just before going to sleep. The tablets should be placed alternately left and right between the cheek and gum.

Contraindications

Sodium fluoride is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity. Refer to the drug label for complete precautions.

Interactions

Calcium, magnesium, and aluminum or milk and antacids reduce the absorption of fluoride and should not be taken concomitantly.

Adverse effects

Rarely, hypersensitivity reactions have been observed.
