Forecast

Since basaliomas of the ear have a very slow growth and rarely metastasize, the prognosis for this type of skin cancer is good. In more than 90% of those affected, the course of the disease after therapy is favourable. Early surgery usually offers the best prognosis with complete recovery. Nevertheless, regular follow-up examinations should still be carried out, as basaliomas can reappear even after several years at the operation scar or in completely different places.

Prevention

Since the most important cause of white skin cancer, i.e. a basalioma, is years of exposure to sunlight, the most important method of preventing a basalioma is adequate sun protection. Sunscreens with high sun protection factors should be used regularly to prevent sunburn and thus light damage to the skin. People with an increased risk for basaliomas (Celtic skin type, genetic predisposition) should regularly check their skin for basaliomas themselves.

Particular attention should be paid to the ears, nose, forehead and scalp and a doctor should be consulted if skin injuries appear to be healing poorly. Since 01 July 2008, annual skin cancer screening has been available as part of the preventive care for all persons over 35 years of age as a benefit from the health insurance scheme. During this examination, the entire body is examined for conspicuous skin changes.
