With correct therapy, the average mortality rate is only 1-5%, but if therapy is started too late or is omitted, it increases up to 60%. Already weakened people with a reduced state of health are considered to be particularly at risk. Although cholera is a serious life-threatening disease in itself, if it is detected as such at an early stage and its symptoms are treated quickly, the probability of survival is very high.

The main problem is more likely to be inadequate sanitation in the affected areas. Therefore the only valuable measure to prevent cholera so far is consistent hygiene. It is also interesting that people with blood group 0 seem to have a higher risk of contracting cholera than those with blood group AB. However, further details have not yet been clarified.
