Chondrocalcinosis is usually free of symptoms. If inflammation and pain occur, they can be treated well with medication so that the symptoms disappear quickly. In the chronic form, the therapy is somewhat more complicated; in rare cases, arthrosis in the joint occurs.

In the worst case, this can lead to permanent damage and restrict movement in the joint. An operation may be necessary to remove destroyed tissue. As a rule, however, chondrocalcinosis is not a disease that should give cause for concern.

Prophylaxis

There is no causal prophylaxis against chondrocalcinosis, but risk factors can be reduced. Thus, it always makes sense to have diseases associated with chondrocalcinosis, e.g. of the thyroid gland and the mineral metabolism, consistently treated. In this way, at least the probability of secondary chondrocalcinosis occurring can be minimised.
