The prognosis for intestinal obstruction in babies depends on the cause and time of diagnosis. In newborn babies, pediatric nurses already pay attention to the baby’s bowel movements and can react directly in case of abnormalities. In this case the prognosis is very good.

In general, a mechanical blockage can be well treated surgically. The therapy is more difficult in the case of paralyzed intestinal muscles, as is the case with Hirschsprung’s disease, for example. If detected early, surgery can also be performed, but this usually means removal of the affected bowel segment, as the nerves are not developed there.
