Fox Tapeworm: Treatment and Prevention

Infection is detected by X-ray, ultrasound examination or computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. However,an accurate diagnosis is obtained only if specific antibodies are detected in the blood. The cyst must be surgically removed. This only becomes dangerous if the cyst wall bursts, in which case the parasites may “seed”.

Chemotherapy can be given with mebendazole, an effective drug for worm infections. However, since this only inhibits further parasite growth, but usually does not destroy the parasite itself, this procedure is only for patients who cannot undergo surgery.

Hygiene as a preventive measure

Based on blood and stool examinations, and X-rays if necessary, the physician can detect a worm infection. Deworming is almost always done with the help of appropriate medications, if necessary also surgically: so tapeworm cysts are removed.

If a child is affected, it is advisable to have the rest of the family examined as well. Hygiene, it cannot be emphasized often enough, is the best protection against infection for humans.

Dogs and cats kept near fox populations, i.e. in rural areas, should be dewormed regularly. The veterinarian will administer a special medication effective against fox tapeworm. Pets should be checked for worms regularly anyway – every two to three months, and dewormed if necessary.

Precautions to take on vacation

To prevent health hazards from these parasites, special precautions for humans and animals should be observed, especially on vacation:

  • Be careful when eating unwashed fruits, vegetables, etc.

  • Avoid contact with stray dogs

  • Keep dogs away from slaughter

  • Deworm animals after a trip abroad necessarily.
