Function of the colon

The gastrointestinal tract is the main part of the human digestive system, which extends from the esophagus to the anus. It is composed of several organs. First, the food pulp passes through the esophagus and the stomach, then it is passed through the small intestine and reaches the large intestine.

The large intestine itself can be divided into 3 parts: The appendix, the colon as the longest part of the large intestine and the rectum. Basically, the first question that arises is whether one can live without the large intestine at all. This is quite possible because the large intestine has no vital functions. These are the functions:

  • To absorb liquid from the intestinal tract,
  • Chair to save,
  • Electrolytes (salts),
  • To produce mucus,
  • To fend off bacteria and diseases,
  • To form important amino acids and vitamins by the colon bacteria.
