Group training under the supervision of a physiotherapist should be started as soon as possible during early rehabilitation.

Sport in the group is communicative, motivates, strengthens self-confidence and promotes exchange with other affected women. In the sports lesson, all motor skills are addressed, with a focus on the shoulders, neck, ribcage mobility and strength, breathing, and general endurance. In order to better clarify the meaning of the exercises for everyday life, most rehabilitation clinics have an occupational therapy department.

In this department the exercises are translated into daily routines. By mastering everyday activities, self-confidence, resilience, adaptability and endurance are strengthened. The degree of difficulty of the procedures is continuously increased depending on the individual’s performance level until discharge, so that the performance level can be reached according to the everyday requirements.

After discharge from the follow-up treatment, other therapies such as chemo, radiation or antibody therapies are often carried out in addition to the daily routine. Psychological support and nutritional advice can also be continued on an outpatient basis. In addition to medical therapy, individual physiotherapy should continue to be carried out on an outpatient basis if necessary (e.g. in the event of pain, restricted movement or lymphedema).

Within the framework of the rehabilitation program, some providers offer special groups for women affected by breast cancer. The duration of the disease or the age is irrelevant. The treating physician decides on the athletic ability and the resilience within the training.

Many women are already familiar with group sports from their follow-up treatment. In rehabilitation sports, the exercises continue to be carried out under supervision and control, group sports motivate and promote the exchange between those affected. If necessary, the women can also participate in a self-help group on site.
