Further follow-up treatment – outpatient

Once the acute phase of spinal canal surgery is over, the rehabilitation phase begins. Here, the patient can decide whether he or she wishes to undergo inpatient or outpatient rehabilitation. The aim of the therapy is to stabilize the spinal column muscularly with simple basic tension exercises: 1st exercise The navel is pulled inwards and the tension is maintained.

The legs are stretched out alternately with the heel over the pad, sanding. It is important not to release the tension in the lower abdomen. One possibility to increase the exercise is: During the tension lift the pelvis upwards (bridging).

This exercise can also be extended by lifting the legs alternately, keeping the leg stretched and number writing and placing the pelvis eccentrically and lifting it concentrically. 2nd Exercise Another exercise is the lifting of the legs to 90°, if the exercise succeeds rather poorly due to missing muscles, the lifting as an exercise is already sufficient. If this is successful, the patient can put his hands on his knees and apply pressure with his hands.

This creates an isometric tension. The patient should perform these basic tension exercises regularly at home to train the deep, stabilizing muscles. Likewise, the mobility should be slowly improved.

Cautious approach to lateral inclination and rotation can be achieved by moving the pelvis in a lateral position.

  • Improvement of strength
  • Improvement of mobility
  • Better coping with everyday life
  • The patient lies in supine position
  • Legs are turned on
  • The lower back is pressed onto the base

Patients usually remain in a bent position of the spine, since bending the spine before the operation has brought relief from past painful days. Through gait training and mobilization into a lateral extension position, the patient is taught the normal posture.

The scar on the back should also be taken into account. This should be mobilized as soon as it has healed well to prevent retractions. As the wound heals, the patient is allowed to put more weight on it and move more.

The exercises for muscle building can be increased and intensified with exercises on the machines in the gym. However, exercises where there is extreme pressure on the spine (lat pull, jogging) should be avoided. In these articles you will find additional information on the topics mentioned here: These are exercises that can be included in the therapy and can also be done at home.

Further exercises for home use can be found in the article: Spinal canal stenosis – exercises for at home. It is particularly important to keep the spine muscularly stable, which the physiotherapist should check. In addition, the patient can start with water gymnastics in addition to the physiotherapy.
