Further Information

Lipomas in the breast area can theoretically cause similar symptoms, but are usually symptomatically unremarkable. Especially in women, lipomas in the breast area are less noticeable, usually they are only palpated by chance by the woman herself or the gynecologist. In order to rule out confusion with other breast diseases, especially breast cancer (see: Detecting breast cancer), lipomas in the breast are often routinely examined even more closely by means of ultrasound or mammography.

An increased risk of cancer does not arise from detected lipomas in the breast tissue, however. Lipomas in the abdomen or flank area, just like breast lipomas, cause hardly any complaints and are usually more difficult to detect, which is due to the increased distribution of subcutaneous fatty tissue in this area. Complaints or symptoms only occur here, too, when the lipoma presses on surrounding nerve structures above a certain size or through a certain position, resulting in sensitivity disorders in the abdominal flank area or even in the lower extremities.
