Further therapeutic measures

Eccentricity is also caused and applied in postisometric relaxation. This method aims at muscle relaxation through a preceding muscle tension, as well as progressive muscle relaxation. In Postisometric Relaxation, the therapist performs the exercises on the patient, while in Progressive Muscle Relaxation the patient works independently.

More information and exercises can be found in the articles Progressive Muscle Relaxation and Postisometric Relaxation. Eccentric training is a very effective method to optimize or stabilize everyday and sports movements. However, since the elasticity of the muscles and adjacent structures can inhibit movement, it is very important to know your own movement limits.

Combine stretching exercises and eccentric training based on your own individual mobility. Overloading can lead to strains, torn muscle fibers or other lesions. Before you start your training program, you should always do warm-up exercises.

After training, techniques for stretching fascia are recommended. The use of weights or resistors should also be done with a progression that is adapted to your physical abilities. The exercises shown above are therefore initially designed without additional weights to get you started.

For people who are very active in sports, the specific type of sport plays an eminent role. Gymnasts can be trained differently than cross-country skiers. In this case, very specific therapy is required to address the limits of mobility and the way the muscle fiber structure is structured.

Also to be taken into account in individual cases is the resilience of the joints, which can limit eccentric training in certain diseases. Basically, it is also important to start slowly and to increase the training program accordingly to prevent injuries.
