Further therapeutic measures for diabetes

The basic therapy of diabetes mellitus type II initially consists of a lifestyle change regarding a balanced diet, sufficient physical activity and weight normalization. These measures alone usually help significantly to lower the blood sugar level in the blood. If the blood sugar level remains uncontrollable despite these measures, a drug therapy should be considered.

Metformin is the drug of choice. There are several other active ingredients in tablet form. If this is not sufficient, the administration of insulin must also be considered for Type II diabetics.

In addition, blood pressure and blood lipids should be optimally adjusted. The therapy of type I diabetics consists from the beginning of a dietary insulin intake adapted to the food, because there is an absolute insulin deficiency in their body, i.e. there is no insulin at all. Both type I and type II diabetics should see their general practitioner regularly during the course of the disease to ensure continuous monitoring of the important parameters.

Also the control of the feet after possible wounds or injuries is part of these preventive examinations. In addition, diabetics should also be under ophthalmologic care, since a dreaded complication of this disease is damage to the retina. If these precautionary measures are followed consistently as well as discipline among those affected, diabetes mellitus represents a disease that is relatively easy to control and in which complications can be completely prevented or very greatly delayed.
