Further therapeutic methods

In addition to the pure physiotherapeutic treatment for patients with patellar pain, additional techniques such as ice treatment, electrotherapy, ultrasound, especially on the surrounding structures (ligaments, tendons), can be used to relieve the irritation and pain. An applied tape can also support the stability. In the acute phase, anti-inflammatory painkillers are prescribed.

If the kneecap does not lie properly on the tibia and femur and there is increased abrasion, we may perform a surgical solution of the external retinal at the knee, so that the kneecap is again in the correct position. Your treating physician will discuss this with you at the appropriate time. and “Physiotherapy for patella luxation”.

Possible causes of patellar pain

There is no exact cause for the patella pain, since different influences can have a negative effect on the patella. Competitive athletes or people who have to work a lot in the knee bend (tilers) are particularly often affected, as irritation of the patella cartilage can occur. Especially if, due to poor statics, the patella does not lie properly between the condyles (rolling hills) of the thigh.

Often this then has a tendency to move to the side (luxation/lateralization). Due to this permanent irritation, the cartilage loses its protective function and bone abrasion occurs more quickly (knee arthrosis). There is pain under the kneecap, crunching noises when moving and swelling can develop.

The pain increases when walking up and down stairs and when sitting for long periods with bent legs. In the case of kneecap pain, it is not only the irritation of the joint cartilage that can trigger the pain, but also an overload of the surrounding structures (ligaments, muscles, tendons). This pain can easily be triggered by palpation (palpation-pressure) to differentiate the affected structure.

A further cause can be muscle imbalances, which either puts the knee joint under incorrect or excessive strain or causes the kneecap to be pulled more in one direction. If the pain below the kneecaps on the patellar tendon is not called patellar pain (Chondropathia patellae), but rather the patellar tip syndrome (Jumpers knee). The danger of patellar disc pain is the development of knee joint arthrosis.
