Gingivitis during pregnancy

Gingivitis during pregnancy is not uncommon. The altered hormone balance can have an effect on the oral cavity, so it is also called pregnancy gingivitis during this period. This is not caused by bacteria, but can be more easily triggered by bacteria. The altered hormone balance favors the accumulation of bacteria and thus also the occurrence of gingivitis.

During this time it is therefore particularly important to brush your teeth regularly and thoroughly and also to clean the hard-to-reach areas with mouthwashes, tongue scrapers and dental floss to counteract the increased risk of gingivitis. The hormone progesterone is elevated and dilates the vessels of the gums and the rest of the oral mucosa, making them more permeable to products of the caries bacteria. If inflammatory processes occur, which can also lead to the accumulation of pus, a visit to the dentist is recommended to discuss further treatment options.

Gingivitis treatment with pus

Gingivitis should definitely be treated to stop the progression of the disease, otherwise there can be serious consequences in the entire masticatory system, such as tooth loss. If purulent accumulations are already present, the gum inflammation is already further advanced and a visit to the dentist is strongly recommended. The dentist will remove the pus, but this is not the end of the treatment.

Removing it is not the only way to fight the cause that has led to the purulent inflammation. If the inflammation is left untreated, it will remain and spread, and in other places the pus can reappear. The most important thing in the treatment of gingivitis is a thorough cleaning of the mouth.

If a thorough cleaning at home is not sufficient or if the inflammation is advanced, a professional cleaning by a dentist is carried out in addition. In this way, various instruments and an ultrasonic device are used to clean even hard-to-reach areas to remove plaque from the teeth. Finally, a gentle polishing is performed, which makes it difficult for plaque to reattach.

Various mouth rinses or ointments can be used to support the cleaning process. Especially the ointments counteract the inflammation, ensure faster healing and reduce hypersensitivity. They contain various active ingredients, such as sage or surface anesthetics (pain-relieving ointments such as Dynexan® Mouth Gel).

Dentists can also prescribe agents that make use of the effect of hydrogen peroxide. Various mouth rinses or ointments can be used to aid cleaning.
