Ginkgo: Dosage

In the trade, numerous ginkgo extracts exist for the treatment of circulatory disorders. The preparations are usually uniformly dosed with 40 or 80 mg of standardized extract and are available in a variety of forms, for example, as tablets, capsules, solution or drops.

Ginkgo: the right dose

The average daily dose is usually based on the indication. For the treatment of dementia, unless otherwise prescribed, the mean daily dose should be 120-240 mg of the dry extract, administered in 2-3 single doses.

For peripheral occlusive disease, dizziness, and tinnitus, the daily dose should be 120-160 mg, also administered in 2-3 single doses.

Ginkgo – preparation and storage

Preparation of a tea from ginkgo leaves is not common, the drug is taken exclusively in the form of special extracts.

Ginkgo leaves or the ginkgo extract should be stored in a cool, dry place, protected from light.

Contraindications: When should ginkgo not be taken?

For pregnant women and nursing mothers, the use of ginkgo leaves is recommended only conditionally, as no experience has been available to date. The leaves should also not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to ginkgo preparations.

Duration of treatment with ginkgo

The duration of treatment with ginkgo extracts depends on the type and severity of the disease:

  • In dementia, the duration of treatment should be at least 8 weeks, and the treatment should be reviewed again after 3 months.
  • To improve walking distance performance in peripheral occlusive disease, ginkgo should be used for a period of at least 6 weeks.
  • If dizziness or tinnitus are treated, use for a period longer than 6-8 weeks no longer provides therapeutic benefit and should then be stopped.
