Goiter: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of goiter (goiter).

Family history

  • Is there a frequent history of thyroid disease in your family?

Social history

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed any enlargement of the thyroid gland? If so, during what time period did it enlarge?
  • Have you experienced any dysphagia?
  • Are you experiencing shortness of breath* or a whistling breath sound?
  • Have you noticed any changes in your eyes such as a drooping eyelid or receding eyeball?
  • Have you recently been suffering from hoarseness?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
    • Do you eat a lot of sea fish?
    • Vegetables from the Crucifeae family (cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, savoy cabbage)?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (hormonal disorders or thyroid disease).
  • Operations
  • Radiation therapy (head or neck region)
  • Allergies
  • Medication history
