Group concept of the neck school

Information

At the beginning of the neck school, information is given about the individual problems of the participants (useful in a one-on-one interview in advance), background knowledge about anatomical basics, pathological muscle activity, stressors, chronification mechanisms, neck-friendly work, recommended sports. Consistent participation: The participants are required to participate continuously and consistently in the group program, otherwise the chances of success will decrease significantly. In each exercise unit, familiar exercises are repeated and increased, new exercises are added, information and support is provided.

Through constant repetition, the movement sequences are automated, unfavorable movement and tension patterns dissolve. Guidance, support and correction by the exercise instructor are useful and necessary over a period of at least 10 weeks in order to learn the exercises and to be able to implement them correctly in everyday life. Active cooperation: The active cooperation according to the therapist’s instructions during the group session and the continuation of the exercise program at least 1-2 times/week at home in addition to the group participation is a prerequisite for the success of the treatment.

Movement and training despite and because of complaints

The unaccustomed activation of tense, shortened or “weak muscle groups” can cause unpleasant feelings of tension and muscle soreness. It can even lead to an increase in pain in the neck and head area or to dizziness. The participants must be informed about these “undesirable reactions” in advance so that they can then deal adequately with the increased pain situation.

Otherwise, there is a risk that those affected will discontinue participation in the neck school. In any case, the exercises should be continued, even if pain intensification is imminent. With the help of the physiotherapist, the execution of the exercises, the extent of movement or the intensity can be changed.

Limits, with the aim of extending them over time, must be observed. Under certain circumstances, even temporary pain medication can allow the program to continue. Once the participants have learned to assess the situation and react adequately, self-acting mechanisms are stimulated and self-confidence is strengthened. As the symptoms improve and negative reactions to stress diminish, the motivation of those affected to continue the program increases.
