Guanethidine is no longer on the market in many countries and many others. Ismelin tablets (Ciba-Geigy) are no longer available.

Structure and properties

Guanethidine (C₁₀H₂₂N₄, M_r = 198.3 g/mol) is present in drugs as guanethidine monosulfate, a white crystalline powder that is highly soluble in water. It is a guanidine derivative.

Effects

Guanethidine (ATC C02CC02) has antihypertensive properties. The effects are due to decreased release of norepinephrine into the synaptic cleft.
