Guidelines for the treatment of atrial fibrillation

The guidelines of the German Society of Cardiology (DGK) provide guidelines for the treatment of atrial fibrillation. To diagnose suspected but undocumented atrial fibrillation, cardiac rhythm monitoring may be necessary to determine the type of atrial fibrillation. In the chronic condition called atrial fibrillation, there are different types of the condition that require different treatment.

In long-term treatment, the German Society of Cardiology recommends, depending on the type and symptoms of atrial fibrillation, the consideration of antithrombotic therapy (blood-thinning), frequency-regulating and rhythm-preserving treatment. Depending on the cause of the atrial fibrillation, treatment of the underlying heart disease may be necessary. The guidelines of the German Society of Cardiology are publicly available.

They can be found on the website of the DGK (https://leitlinien. dgk. org/keyword/apronifibrillation/) and can be requested in writing from the DGK. The supervising cardiologist is responsible for the application of the guidelines for the treatment of atrial fibrillation.
