Hair tonic – Does it really care?

Definition – What is hair tonic?

Hair tonic is a liquid that is applied to the hairline and scalp and massaged into the scalp and should contribute to its care. Depending on the product, it can have very different functions. For example, it can be used for cosmetic purposes, such as hairdressing, or for medical purposes, such as to combat dandruff or dry scalp. The hair tonic can have a positive effect on both the scalp and the hair.

What does the hair tonic do for the hair?

The application of hair tonic has many different purposes. On the one hand, hair tonic is supposed to counteract hair loss. Other hair tonic not only counteract hair loss, but even stimulate the scalp to a new synthesis of hair.

But also for the application against oily hair, dry and irritated scalp and against psoriasis, different hair tonic can be used. Hair tonic is also often used preventively. Hair tonic is also used preventively.

Hair loss can be specifically prevented and combated by hair tonic. However, there are different reasons for hair loss, which must be handled differently. On the one hand, it can be hereditary, but on the other hand, hair loss can also be caused by hormonal malfunction.

According to the different causes of hair loss, there are different active ingredients, some of which are synthetically produced, but some of which are also derived from nature. Hereditary hair loss is usually nothing to counteract. One active ingredient that is often used as a hair loss remedy is minoxidil.

Minoxidil has the effect that it stimulates the blood circulation of the scalp and thus provides an improved anchorage of the hair follicles in the scalp. This is to prevent increased hair loss. Minoxidil also has a second effect, namely it stimulates the new synthesis of hair follicles.

This has the consequence that new hair can grow. Another active ingredient against hair loss is caffeine. Hair tonic containing caffeine is mainly used by men.

For this purpose, the caffeine is applied directly to the hair root, where, as with Minoxidil, it is said to stimulate the blood circulation of the scalp. This way, nutrients and minerals can be brought to the hair follicles in an improved way, thus strengthening the hairline. Natural remedies from nature, such as nettle or birch, can also often be found in hair tonics.

Like the active ingredients described above, they have an effect on the blood circulation of the scalp and thus lead to a better supply of nutrients to the hair roots. If you are looking for a solution against greasy hair, hair tonic with a relatively high alcohol content is often used. Oily hair is caused by an increased production of fat by the sebaceous glands, which are located on the scalp.

Normally, these are responsible for the healthy condition of the scalp. However, if overproduction occurs, too much fat is produced, which is why hair is often referred to as ‘greasy’. The alcohol in the hair tonic has a drying effect on the scalp and thus has a ‘degreasing’ effect. In addition, hair tonic containing nettle helps against greasy hair.
