Hand-Foot-Mouth Disease: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) is an important component in the diagnosis of hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD).

Family history

  • What is the general health of your family members?

Social anamnesis

Current medical history/systemic medical history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Did you have a fever at the onset of your illness? Low appetite? Sore throat?
  • Two days after the onset of your fever, did you have painful rashes around the mucous membranes of your mouth? Of the tongue? Of the gums?
  • Did you have a non-itchy rash within 1-2 days?
  • Did it show flat or raised red spots – sometimes with blistering?
  • What other complaints do you have?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you suffer from loss of appetite?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • Pregnancies
