Hand Pain

Hand pain (synonyms: pain, hand; ICD-10-GM M79.64: pain in extremities: Hand; ICD-10-GM M25.54: Joint pain: hand; fingers, carpus, metacarpus, joints between these bones) can be the symptom of many different conditions.

Common causes of hand pain include overuse and possible trauma (injury).

In the case of injury, wrist injuries caused by trauma or overuse of the upper extremities are the most common cause of hand pain (see wrist arthralgia/wrist pain below).

Hand pain can be acute, subacute, or chronic. Acute pain is most often caused by trauma or overuse of the hand. Chronic pain is said to occur when it lasts longer than 3 months.

Hand pain occurs frequently. However, they are a reason for medical consultation only when the cause of the pain is unknown or the pain does not stop.

Hand pain can be a symptom of many diseases (see under “Differential diagnoses”).

Course and prognosis: Prognosis depends on the nature and severity of the underlying condition.
