Hay Fever (Allergic Rhinitis): Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate allergic rhinitis (hay fever):

Nose

  • Sneezing attacks (sneezing)
  • Pruritus (here: nasal itching)
  • Burning
  • Rhinorrhea – watery secretion (runny nose; runny nose).
  • Swelling of the nasal mucosa
  • Nasal obstruction of breathing (NAB) or nasal obstruction.
  • Nasal language (Rhinophonia clausa)

Eyes In the foreground are symptoms of conjunctivitis (conjunctivitis):

  • Burning
  • Pruritus
  • Redness
  • Watering eyes
  • Swelling of the conjunctiva (conjunctiva)
  • Eyelid edema
  • So-called haloed eyes (infraorbital darkening of the skin due to chronic venous hyperemia/excessive blood supply).

Neck

  • Sore throat
  • Itching in the area of the palate
  • Dry cough irritation

Furthermore, sinuses, ears and larynx (larynx) may be affected.

Other symptoms

  • Shortness of breath
  • Mouth breathing
  • Cephalgia (headache)
  • Dysosmia (olfactory disorder; olfactory disorder) (frequency 20-40%).
  • Temperature rise to fever
  • Fatigue and difficulty concentrating
  • Sleep disturbances

Other notes

  • The pollen allergy sufferer has complaints only seasonally, that is, depending on the pollen count in certain weeks and months of the year:
    • March to April (birch, alder, hazel).
    • June/July (grasses)
  • Almost always, allergic inflammation affects not only the mucosa, but also the conjunctiva at the same time (seasonal conjunctivitis) and sometimes the lower respiratory tract (seasonal asthma).

Warning signs (red flags)

The following symptoms are indicative of allergic rhinitis (consider differential diagnoses):

  • Unilateral symptomatology
  • Viscous, green or yellow secretion
  • Recurrent nosebleeds
  • Facial pain
  • Absence of conjunctivitis (inflammation of the conjunctiva).
  • Persistent anosmia (reduction or complete absence of olfactory perception).
