The way children fall causes that very often an accident leads to pain in the back of the head. Furthermore, tension, cervical spine deformities and poor posture can also cause back pain in the child. If they occur more frequently, a CT or MRI examination should be performed and the neck muscles should be stabilized under physiotherapeutic care. Migraine can also occur in children and can affect the back of the head. It is important to pay attention to accompanying symptoms such as aura, visual disturbances, vomiting or dizziness.

When should I see the doctor?

In most cases, headache in children is as safe and common as in adults. However, there are some warning symptoms that should be seen by a doctor immediately. If a child has headache together with fever or neck stiffness, the doctor must rule out meningitis.

In young children, neck stiffness is still difficult to determine, but in older children, a specific examination can determine whether or not neck stiffness exists. An increase in intracranial pressure, which can manifest itself as headaches, clouding of consciousness and morning vomiting, is also dangerous. If the child with headache has suffered a previous trauma, it is better to refer him/her to a clinical observation.

Also considered potentially dangerous is sudden onset of severe pain of destruction, accompanying eye pain and motor impairment. For these symptoms, it is advisable to seek clarification as soon as possible in order to avoid more serious and avoidable consequences. In the case of headaches that occur at least once a week over a longer period of time and do not allow the child to participate in everyday activities, a medical examination is also absolutely necessary.
