Healing and prognosis | Torn ligament at the foot

Healing and prognosis

Often, after appropriate first aid measures after a twist injury, the pain soon subsides. However, in most cases it is still advisable to consult a doctor. If it is not only a pulled muscle but also a torn ligament, inappropriate treatment can lead to permanent joint problems.

The ligaments of the foot are extremely important for the stability of the ankle joint. If a torn ligament heals poorly, the joint can remain permanently unstable. In this case, twisting injuries occur again and again with the risk of renewed ligament injuries.

This can be a considerable impairment in everyday life, at work and during sports. In addition, incorrect loading of the unstable joint can lead to painful joint wear (arthrosis) with wear and tear of the protective joint cartilage. In principle, however, a torn ligament on the foot heals very well and without consequences with the appropriate treatment.

The leg may be carefully loaded again as soon as the complaints have subsided. A simple rule says that everything that does not hurt is allowed. For this reason, the pain should not be numbed with medication, because early overloading can prolong the healing process. Sports activities that put strain on the injured ankle should only be resumed after the ligament has torn at the foot after the sparing and healing phase (after six weeks), otherwise there is a renewed risk of ligament injury.

Prophylaxis

Well-trained shin muscles are the most important stabilisation for the ankle and foot. In order to effectively protect yourself from torn ligaments in the foot, it is therefore very important to strengthen the calf muscles. Anyone who has already had a torn ligament can wear special sports shoes with more support or a supporting bandage to assist them during sports activities.

Special sensomotoric exercises have also proven to be effective in the prevention of torn ligaments in the foot. For example, balancing on a balance board can be very useful. In combination with movements performed simultaneously, such as catching a ball, important movement patterns are automated and the ankle joint becomes more stable. In addition, wearing shoes with high heels should be avoided, as it shortens the calf muscles and increases the risk of ligament injuries.
