Therapy recommendations

  • Drug therapy is not currently available for hypacusis (hearing loss. However, substances are in development that could possibly have a promoting effect on the growth of the sensitive hair cells.
  • Presence of a hearing loss: see below hearing loss / drug therapy.
  • Presence of acute sensorineural hearing loss:
    • Primary therapy: systemic glucocorticoids at high doses (eg, 250 mg/d prednisolone for 5 days).
    • Secondary therapy: intratympanic glucocorticoid therapy.
    • Tertiary therapy: tympanoscopy (surgical procedure on the middle ear in which the tympanic membrane is detached and folded to the side to gain an overview of the condition of the middle ear: e.g. due toexclusion of an obstruction of the round window membrane) and under vision targeted application of glucocorticoids into the oval and round window niche.
  • Therapy of first choice are hearing aids (hearing therapy) in the presence of a severity grade I (low-grade hearing loss) to grade III (high-grade hearing loss – see below “Further therapy”.
