Hearing Loss (Hypacusis): Therapy

General measures

  • Nicotine restriction (refraining from tobacco use).
  • Limited alcohol consumption (men: max. 25 g alcohol per day; women: max. 12 g alcohol per day).
  • Aim for normal weight! Determination of BMI (body mass index, body mass index) or body composition by means of electrical impedance analysis and, if necessary, participation in a medically supervised weight loss program or program for underweight.
  • Avoidance of psychosocial stress:
    • Psychological stresses
    • Stress
  • Avoidance of environmental stress:
    • Explosion trauma, blast trauma.

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

  • Hyperbaric oxygenation (HBO; synonyms: hyperbaric oxygen therapy, HBO therapy; hyperbaric oxygen therapy; HBO2, HBOT); therapy in which medically pure oxygen is applied under an elevated ambient pressure.
    • Severe or refractory cases may benefit from a combination of HBOT with glucocorticoid therapy; authors recommended for this purpose: 100% oxygen at a pressure of 2.0 to 2.5 bar, either for two weeks at 90 minutes daily or alternatively 20 days at 60 minutes each; combination therapy resulted in patients in this group hearing significantly better (OR 1.43), as well as an increased chance of fully recovering original hearing (OR 1.61).
  • The timing of the start of hyperbaric oxygen therapy seems to be decisive for the success of therapy (absolute and relative hearing gain): so according to the study results, the start of therapy should be within 24 to 48 hours after hearing loss.

Regular check-ups

  • Regular medical checkups

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Daily total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruits (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruits).
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grain products).
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
