Heart Murmurs: Medical History

The medical history (history of the patient) represents an important component in the diagnosis of heart murmurs.

Family history

  • Is there any history of heart disease in your family?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed any cardiac stuttering?
  • Have you noticed any general symptoms such as fatigue, lack of performance, or shortness of breath* on exertion?
  • Do you feel dizzy?
  • Have you ever fainted?*
  • Does your child have a drinking weakness?* (question for parents).
  • Have you noticed a purplish to bluish discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, lips, and fingernails?
  • How long have these changes been present?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you get enough exercise every day? How many floors can you climb stairs without shortness of breath?

Self anamnesis incl. medication anamnesis

  • Pre-existing conditions (heart disease)
  • Operations
  • Allergies
  • Medication history
