Heartburn (Pyrosis)

As heartburn (synonyms: Heart burn; Stomach burn; Pyrosis (heartburn); Heartburn; ICD-10 R12: Heartburn) is the burning sensation in the stomach area caused by the reflux of gastric juice into the esophagus (food pipe).

It is not a disease, but a symptom of heartburn.

Gender ratio: men and women are equally affected.

Frequency peak: the disease occurs more frequently after the age of 50 years.

The prevalence (disease frequency) for heartburn is 30% of the population (in western industrialized countries). The average person complains of heartburn at least once every six months or year.

Course and prognosis: As long as heartburn occurs only occasionally and disappears spontaneously, it is harmless. If heartburn occurs once a week, it should be clarified by a doctor. If the heartburn lasts longer, the esophagus can be permanently damaged and reflux esophagitis (esophagitis) develops.
