Hemp Oil

Products

Hemp oil is available, for example, in pharmacies, drugstores and grocery stores from various suppliers. This article refers to the fatty oil and not the essential oil.

Ingredients

Hemp oil is a fatty oil usually obtained by cold pressing the seeds of hemp plants ( sp.). It is very rich in essential polyunsaturated fatty acids (omega-3 and omega-6) and has a high content of linoleic acid and alpha-linolenic acid. Cannabinoids such as tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol may be present in very small amounts depending on the manufacturing process. However, due to THC being present only in trace amounts, no psychoactive effects occur. The antioxidant vitamin E is another component of the oil.

Effects

Hemp oil has skin caring properties and it is believed to have health promoting effects mainly due to the unsaturated fatty acids and tocopherols.

Areas of application

Hemp oil is mainly used as an edible oil, as a skin care agent and for the production of cosmetics and dietary supplements.

Dosage

Hemp oil should be used cold and not heated. After first opening after each use, close tightly, protect from light and store in a cool place.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity

Hemp oil is not recommended for infants and young children.

Adverse effects

Like other oils, hemp oil has a high caloric value of over 900 kcal per 100 g. Due to the double bonds in the unsaturated fatty acids, the oil may become rancid over time. If THC is present, this can lead to a positive drug or doping test during a control. This has been confirmed in studies.
