Hepatitis A Postexposure Prophylaxis

Postexposure prophylaxis is the provision of medication to prevent disease in persons who are not protected against a particular disease by vaccination but have been exposed to it.

Indications (areas of application)

  • Persons in contact with a diseased person, especially in community settings.

Implementation

  • Postexposure vaccination with monovalent HAV vaccine within 14 days of exposure:
    • After exposure of persons for whom hepatitis A poses a particularly high risk (e.g., those chronically infected with HBV or HCV), an immunoglobulin preparation should be given simultaneously with the 1st vaccination.
