Hepatitis E: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of hepatitis E.

Family history

  • What is the general health status of your family members?

Social history

  • Have you recently been to countries with low hygienic standards (Africa, Asia, Central/South America).
    • Have you consumed raw food there?
    • Did you consume drinks with ice cubes there?
  • Do you work or live in community facilities?
  • What is your occupation? (At-risk groups are: Hunters, forest workers, pig farmers or slaughterhouse workers).

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • Have you noticed symptoms such as general feeling of illness recently?
  • Are you experiencing abdominal pain?
  • Do you have a fever?
  • Have you had gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea?
  • Have you noticed yellowing of the skin?
  • Do you have itching?

Vegetative anamnesis incl. nutritional anamnesis

  • Have there been any changes in bowel movements and/or urine? In quantity, consistency, color, admixtures?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (infectious diseases)
  • Operations/transfer of blood products
  • Vaccination status
  • Allergies
  • Medication history
