The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by a herpes labialis infection:
Respiratory system (J00-J99)
- Herpes simplex pneumonia in immunosuppression – pneumonia caused by herpes simplex virus.
Eyes and eye appendages (H00-H59).
- Herpetic keratoconjunctivitis – inflammation of the cornea and conjunctiva.
Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).
- Eczema herpeticatum – severe herpes infection in infants who also have atopy (genetic predisposition to respond to aerogenic (“airborne”), gastrointestinal (“via the gastrointestinal tract”), or cutaneous (“via the skin”) contact with natural or man-made environmental agents with increased IgE formation)
Psyche – Nervous System (F00-F99; G00-G99).
- Herpes encephalitis – inflammation of the brain caused primarily by herpes simplex virus type 1; lethality (mortality) > 80%.
- Idiopathic facial paresis (Bell’s palsy) – paralysis of a facial nerve; connection with the herpes simplex virus type 1 is discussed.
