Hesperitin: Definition, Synthesis, Absorption, Transport, and Distribution

Hesperitin or the aglycone hesperidin belong to the group of flavanones. They are mostly present as citrus extracts – obtained from grapefruit and orange, respectively – and have the following characteristics:

  • High bioavailability, that is, after the supply can be measured in the blood high concentrations of the active substances.
  • Fat soluble – high concentrations are detectable in cell membranes.
  • Antioxidant – trap free radicals or neutralize aggressive oxygen molecules/compounds (superoxide; hyperoxyl radicals).
  • DNA (genetic information) – protection
  • Stimulating the formation of phase II enzymes – these enzymes have a detoxifying effect on some toxins and chemicals.
