Hibiscus: Effect and Side Effects

The sugars and acids contained in hibiscus are responsible for its refreshing taste. A slight immunomodulating effect is probably attributable to the polysaccharides. An explanation for the laxative effect could lie in the fruit acids. These are not absorbed in the intestine, i.e., not absorbed into the bloodstream, and thus lead to an increased retention of water in the intestine.
